Recipe type: Appetizer
Serves: serves 3 - 4
  • 2 large russet potatoes – peeled
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp dried oregano (optional)
  • Dash of black pepper
  • 2 tsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  1. In a medium pot, add in potatoes and cover with water. Parboil for 6 – 7 mins. The potatoes need not be thoroughly cooked.
  2. Remove and set aside to cool.
  3. Grate the potatoes in a large bowl.
  4. Mix all the seasoning in a small bowl (except flour) and add to the grated potatoes.
  5. Mix evenly with a fork and give it a taste. Adjust with more salt if needed.
  6. Sprinkle in flour and toss well. The mixture should feel dry.
  7. Take a dollop (roughly the size of a teaspoon) of the potato mixture and shape into mini 1-inch log shape.
  8. You could also form them into hash brown.
  9. Heat oil in a deep pot or pan over medium heat.
  10. Add the potatoes in, about 5 – 6 at a time and leave them untouched for 30 seconds.
  11. Move them around with a strainer and cook until they achieve a crisp and golden crust. It should take about 2 – 3 mins.
  12. Drain on paper towel and serve warm.
  13. Make ahead: After the tater tots are cooled, transfer into airtight container or Ziploc bag. Freeze for up to 1 month. To eat, preheat oven to 200°C/400°F and bake for 15 mins.
