Restaurant Review: La Tapería

We were HIGHLY recommended by my dear sister, who insisted we should check out La Tapería. Opened by the award-winning Les Amis Group, I was very intrigued to find out how this 2-year old Spanish Tapas place would fare.

Upon entering La Tapería, its soft lighting, chocolate brown interior makes it a perfect spot for a cozy intimate dinner for couples and family.

We sat down at a table near to the kitchen and thankfully, the food smell did not permeated into our clothes and hair. I trust they have a good kitchen exhaust system.

Semi open kitchen concept.

There is a long communal table at the alfresco balcony area that would be appropriate for drinks and small bites.

Salteado de champiñones (mushrooms sautéed in extra virgin olive oil, $8)

Salteado de champiñones (mushrooms sautéed in extra virgin olive oil, $8)

When the sauté mushrooms came, a deep aroma of smokiness emitted from the sizzling hot terracotta plate ramekin. The intense earthy mushroom flavor was so apparent with every bite. Being a side dish, this simple ingredient totally blew us away.

Ensalada (Mesclun salad with vinaigrette, $7)

Ensalada (Mesclun salad with vinaigrette, $7)

No meal is conducted without some fibre so we ordered a side of simple green salad. Again, the vinaigrette dressing on the salad was so well-balanced, every leaf was coated with the refreshing tangy dressing. I could actually taste the nuttiness from the olive oil too.

Anchoas En Pan De Cristal (Smoked anchovy fillets on crystal bread, 4 pieces, $18)

Anchoas En Pan De Cristal (Smoked anchovy fillets on crystal bread, 4 pieces, $18)

We are huge fans of anchovy fillets so naturally, we had to order this. There were mixed reviews on this dish at our table. Two of our dining partners thought the anchovies were too fishy but I thought the chilled garlic tomato sauce and crispy bread balanced it out pretty nicely.

Cocktails House Special

La Taperia Siesta and El Matador ($16)

El Matador ($16)

Gambas Al Ajillo (Prawn cooked with garlic chili and extra virgin olive oil, $20)

Gambas Al Ajillo (Prawn cooked with garlic chili and extra virgin olive oil, $20)

The look of this dish did not do it justice. When the dish arrived, it was piping hot and the olive oil was still bubbling. The smell was really tantalizing, we almost couldn’t wait for Tiger to finish taking this shot to dive into the succulent prawns. I was pleasantly surprised how fresh and bouncy they tasted and the garlic chips were so addictively good.

Chipirones Fritos En Su Tinta (Crispy baby squid cooked in squid ink with garlic mayo, $16)

Chipirones Fritos En Su Tinta (Crispy baby squid cooked in squid ink with garlic mayo, $16)

The garlic mayo is heavenly.

The garlic mayo is heavenly.

Oh my, oh my. This is definitely my favorite dish of the night. It might look like a pile of charcoal but trust me, they are insanely fragrant, crispy and flavorful. The batter is so light and shattering crispy I could keep eating and eating them. The accompanying garlic mayonnaise dip is perfect to go with these babies. Best of all, you will not stain your teeth with any black squid ink.

Chuletillas De Cordero (Grilled Welsh lamb rack with piquillo pepper sauce, $38)

Chuletillas De Cordero (Grilled Welsh lamb rack with piquillo pepper sauce, $38)

For lamb lovers, you would seek joy in this gamey char grilled lamb rack. Personally, I’m not a fan of lamb because of its gaminess so I can’t say I like this dish. But my lamb-loving companions at the table loved it so I trust that it is good.

Rollito De Jamon Relleno De Calamar (Squid wrapped in jamon iberico a la plancha, 4 pieces, $18)

Rollito De Jamon Relleno De Calamar (Squid wrapped in jamon iberico a la plancha, 4 pieces, $18)

The saltiness from the jamon iberico went really well with the slivers of squid. They were tender to the bite and definitely not overcooked.

Paella Negra De Marisco (Squid ink seafood paella, regular size, $32)

Paella Negra De Marisco (Squid ink seafood paella, regular size, $32)

Even though we ordered a regular size, the portion was pretty substantial and by the time this dish arrived, we were pretty stuffed. It definitely more than enough for 4 pax. Although, they were generous with the amount of seafood on the paella, all of us found it to be a tad too “fishy”. Be warned this is a squid-ink laden dish so be very conscious when talking or smiling while eating this.

Even though we were up to our neck with the meal and drinks, we couldn’t help but to order one dessert to share.

Marques De Chocolate (Chocolate Marquise topped with baked almond praline, $14)

Marques De Chocolate (Chocolate Marquise topped with baked almond praline, $14)

This chocolatey dessert was highly recommended by the server so naturally, we went for it. Chocolate marquise is actually a rick, dark chocolate mousse and it came really well-chilled (think ice-cream texture). Paired with the sweet crunchy almond praline, it was an almost perfect ending to this wonderful meal.

I thought perhaps a drizzle of some sort of fruit coulis to cut through the amount of richness and sweetness, will make this a 10/10 dessert.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the dinner. It has been a while since I was wowed by any eateries we’ve been to lately. Besides the well-executed dishes, the level of service was very commendable as well. The servers were attentive and ever so polite which is rare when it comes to a semi-casual restaurant.

We’ll be back! 🙂

We paid $328 in total for this meal for 4 pax.
