Doritos + chicken wings. Is that combination possible??? The answer is yes. My daughter is a huge fan of Doritos (Cool Ranch flavor), so you could imagine how excited she was when I made these.
Thanks to the good people from Froth who gave me this inspiration and also yummly.com, I was able to share this amazingly simple yet mouth-watering recipe with you.
If deep frying method is not your cup of tea, you could also bake them in the oven. Having tried both versions, it was no surprise deep frying yielded a crisper texture than baking. But both versions of winglets tasted just as moist and juicy as the other.
1 lb (450 g) about 16 pieces chicken winglets (or any of your favorite parts of the chicken)
2 cups buttermilk*
1 bag of Doritos (I’m using Spicy Nacho Cheese flavor)
1 cup plain flour + 2 tbsp garlic powder
2 eggs – beaten
2 tbsp garlic powder (alternatively, you could substitute with 2 cloves minced garlic)
2 tbsp salt
Vegetable oil for frying
Makes 16 pieces

Rinse the wings and set aside. Combine the buttermilk, salt, garlic powder, black pepper in a bowl and mix well.
Put the winglets into a large zip loc bag and pour the buttermilk mixture into the bag. Close the bag and squish them around, making sure they are thoroughly coated. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Using a food processor, pulse the Doritos into coarse breadcrumb-like bits. Alternatively, you could put them in a zip loc bag and crush them with a rolling pin.
When you are ready to make the winglets, take them out of the fridge and bring to room temperature, about 30 mins.
Place the flour, eggs and Doritos separately into 3 bowls / plates.
Take the winglets one by one and dredge them in the flour, follow by the egg and lastly the Doritos. Make sure the winglets are well coated during each process.
Place a few winglets in hot oil and deep fry for about 5 mins. Make sure they are cooked under medium low heat so they will be cooked through.
Alternatively, you could bake them in a baking tray lined with baking paper at 200°C/400°F for 15 mins, turning them half way through the cooking process.
Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
