Chinese Sesame Cookie Balls (笑口棗)

Chinese Sesame Cookie Balls (Siu Hao Zou in Cantonese) was one of the quintessential CNY goodies we had in our household during my childhood years. Sadly, I haven’t had the chance to savor them anymore in the recent years. Being brought up in a typical Cantonese household, the traditional CNY goodies we had were Kok Zai (Mini Peanut Puffs), Jien Duy (Glutinous Sesame Balls), Nien Gou (Sticky Pudding), etc. Most of them were handmade by either mom, Godma or neighbors but they turned up their aprons long ago.
For non-Cantonese, Siu Hao Zou literally means “Laughing Dates”. It’s not hard to guess how the name came about – when the cookie balls are fried, they cracked open resembling a laughing mouth. I personally think they looked like Pac-Man (the yellow little ghost eating character) too.

These cookie balls are crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside and the best part is they are super easy to make. I hope you’ll have a great time celebrating the Lunar New Year and lastly, here’s a quote from the good people of IKEA Singapore this year – GOAT XI FA CAI everyone!

Ingredients:
300 g Cake Flour (Plain flour is fine too)
120 g granulated sugar
3 tbsp hot water
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 egg
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
100 g raw white sesame seeds
Vegetable oil for frying

Makes about 70 mini balls

If the heat is too high, the exterior will turn brown too quickly and inside will be soft and raw. Just when they are about to turn golden brown, remove from heat and drain. They will continue to cook further and will crisp up when cooled.
